My Secrets to Making Perfect Popcorn

Published:  05/23/2017

Popcorn is a healthy snack when prepared in a nutritious manner.

I will tell you my secrets on how I have perfected making THE most delicious and healthy popcorn over the years!

I have been known for my popcorn for years. Everyone that comes over to visits asks me to make some. I've taught them all how to make it and now I will tell you my secrets.

1. You must have the right equipment. I've made airpopped, stove top, microwave, you name it. None of those work well. My secret is the Whirly Pop. There are several models but the only one you want to get is the Aluminum with the Metal Gears. Trust me. It has to do with science. You can get the more expensive stainless steel one (and you should if you live on a boat where stainless steel is the best metal that won't degrade) but for home living you'll want aluminum. The aluminim heats up quickly and more importantly, it cools down very quickly. If you cook your popcorn in a pan that retains the heat (like stainless) your popcorn will get dry, overcooked and potentially burned.  With aluminum, the pan loses it's heat quickly that yields tender popcorn.

2. Use canola oil. It has a smoke point of 400 degrees and has a neutral flavor that won’t overpower the popcorn.

3. Do not overheat the oil. Oil heated past the smoke point can taste bitter, scorched or rancid. As you are learning to make popcorn, pay attention to what heat setting you have it at. You want a nice steady popping.

4. Use yellow popcorn. Do not use white. It pops up smaller than yellow and doesn't have the flavor yellow does. Unlike white popcorn, yellow kernels grow  forty-five times their size. When fully popped, yellow popcorn takes on a fluffy, durable texture. These popcorn kernels are often the ones found at movie theaters.

5. Have beautiful popcorn bowls. I used to serve the popcorn in one large bowl and my husband and I would share it. He eats faster than me and it makes me feel rushed so I got us each our own popcorn bowls.

Homemade Whirly Pop Popcorn Recipe

  • Have your large popcorn bowl next to the stove.
  • Place popper on stove but do not turn it on yet. Add ½ cup yellow popcorn kernels and 3 tablespoons of canola oil.
  • Turn on the stove fan and turn on the burner. Medium – high heat is best. Your stove could be different so experiment each time you make a batch of popcorn to learn what works.
  • Stir slowly, adjust temperature as needed so popping is complete in about 3 minutes.
  • Continue stirring through entire process until there is only an occasional pop...pop, or until the handle becomes hard to turn. Do not force the handle.
  • Remove from heat immediately or it will burn.
  • Transfer into a serving bowl
  • Add a sprinkle of salt and toss to distribute.
  • Enjoy!

CAUTION: Never leave popper unattended while popping

Popcorn Can Be a Nutritious Healthy Snack

Here are some reasons why popcorn is often seen as a healthier snack option:

Whole grain: Popcorn is made from whole grains, which means it retains its bran, germ, and endosperm. Whole grains provide essential nutrients like fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Fiber promotes healthy digestion, helps control blood sugar levels, and contributes to a feeling of fullness.

Low in calories: Air-popped popcorn is relatively low in calories compared to many other snacks. It is naturally low in fat and contains no cholesterol or sodium. By choosing plain or lightly seasoned popcorn, you can enjoy a satisfying snack without adding excessive calories.

High in fiber: Popcorn is a good source of dietary fiber. Fiber aids digestion, helps maintain bowel regularity, and promotes satiety, which can be beneficial for weight management. It also supports heart health by helping to lower cholesterol levels.

Antioxidants: Popcorn contains polyphenols, which are antioxidants that help protect the body against damage caused by free radicals. Some studies have suggested that the polyphenols found in popcorn have potential health benefits, including reducing inflammation and preventing certain chronic diseases.

Versatility and customization: Popcorn can be a versatile snack that can be enjoyed plain or seasoned with various herbs and spices. By making your own popcorn at home, you have control over the ingredients and can avoid adding excessive salt, sugar, or unhealthy fats.

While popcorn can be a healthy snack option, it's essential to be mindful of portion sizes and avoid heavily buttered or flavored popcorn varieties that may be high in unhealthy fats, sodium, or added sugars. Opt for air-popped popcorn or lightly seasoned versions to maximize the health benefits.
