Flight booking tips from Expedia's 2026 Air Hacks Report

The 2026 data on the cheapest days to book and fly

The cheapest day to book flights in 2026 is no longer Tuesday, and that's the headline shift from Expedia's newest Air Hacks Report. Every year Expedia crunches millions of real flight bookings into this report, and the 2026 edition just rewrote one of travel's oldest rules. If you've been booking on Tuesday out of habit, it's time to update your playbook. Here's what the data actually shows.

The "Book on Tuesday" Rule Is Officially Dead

Friday is now the cheapest day to book a flight, while Sunday is the most expensive. The gap is about 3 percent, and Expedia credits the shift to business travelers heading home earlier in the week, which frees up seats and softens prices heading into the weekend.

When You Fly Still Matters More Than When You Book

For domestic trips, Tuesday remains the cheapest day to fly, averaging 14 percent less than a Sunday departure. Sunday is the priciest day across the board. On international routes, Friday runs cheaper than the weekend, with Saturday the most expensive day to depart.

On international routes, Friday is your best bet for both booking and flying, with the weekend running the most expensive.

Book Closer to Departure Than You'd Think

The old instinct to lock in fares six months out actually costs you money. For domestic economy, the best time to book flights is 15 to 30 days before departure, which averages about $130 less than booking 180 days ahead. For international economy, booking a few weeks out saves roughly $190 versus the six-month-early fare. The boldest travelers can do even better by booking just 8 to 15 days out, though you'll trade away seat selection and nonstop availability for the discount.

The Cheapest Months to Fly

August is the most affordable month overall, with fares averaging 29 percent less than December and saving roughly $120 per ticket. For domestic travel specifically, January is the cheapest month to fly, thanks to the post-holiday demand drop. December is the most expensive month to fly, no surprise there.

Where to Put Those Savings

Once you've booked your flights for less, put those savings toward the trip itself. Here are the clever cruise items you'll love that I never sail without:

The Bottom Line

Prices move constantly, so the real hack is flexibility. Shift your departure to a Tuesday, book two to four weeks out instead of half a year, and lean toward January or August travel when your schedule allows. Small changes, real savings.
